What can I do with a pine cone?

I am working on a project with kindergarten through 5th graders with recycled materials. I have recently collected many pine cones in hopes of using them for an art project. Any ideas besides bird feeders? I am trying to stick with other recycled materials with the project.
Also I am looking to do it over the summer. Practical things
Also Something fun, creative. I have found you can make squirrels but there is not much use for that. Again, something that can be used for different seasons. I found these pine cones in the middle of summer

I have seen some nice Christmas Tree decorations made from pinecones. Obviously that would only be appropriate for christians. Here are some more ideas
