Hummingbirds is a remarkable effort from the southern dream pop outfit Venus Hum. This EP shimmers and sparkles with electronic delight, while it's also an impressive look at what's yet to come from this ambitious three-piece. Kip Kubin and Tony Miracle tweak the digital instrumentation, while vocalist Annette Strean delivers a warm, rich sound. The title track is an electric haze of lush lyrical depictions mixed with new wave aesthetic, whereas "Run Annie Run" raves in brighter synth beats for a kitschy club/dance schtick. "Illumine" is a soothing, ambient cast from Venus Hum, and overall their energy is intoxicating. Prepare for a sonic daydream trip on Hummingbirds. ~ MacKenzie Wilson

When should I expect the hummingbirds to leave for migration?

The hummingbirds first started visiting my backyard in late March, early April and also built a nest in the trees above our house (we live on a hill). Anyways, they came so much during April and May, and started decreasing in June but they are still here in July! I filled up the sugar water feeder last week and it's almost empty again. Plus I always see them outside, perching in the trees nearby or drinking out of the feeder.

I know they leave for migration, but I don't know when. I heard they travel 1,000 miles to Central/South America! How long do they stay there and when exactly do they leave? Right before winter?

I live in California and the hummingbirds we have here are mainly Anna's, although I have seen some Rufous ones (or Allen's, the two species are basically identical unless you can get a good look at them!)

Anna's Hummingbirds are non-migratory and are found in most parts of California year round. We also get some migrants in California including Allen's, Rufous, Costa's, Black-chinned, and Calliope. Not sure what part of California you live in in, but in So. Cal the latest Black-chins and Rufous have been seen in the area through the beginning of Sept. The Allen's and Costas have been seen as late as the end of August. So, it can vary depending exactly where in the state you live. Another interesting tidbit..there is also an endemic subspecies of Allen's Hummingbird found on Catalina Island year round.
